Race 07: Retro Pack Review
Race 07 Retro Pack is great! Infact, it’s the best driving game I’ve played in a long time.
Recently driving games have seemed to become something else – something other than driving games. They’ve developed casinos, clothes stores, guns and gimmicks galore. Driving games not guilty of the above have other methods of distracting from actually driving, like extra long cut scenes and over complicated menus.
Race 07 keeps things uncluttered and unpretentious. The Retro Pack adds a huge, and I mean huuuge element of cool. These cars are very, very cool. The graphics on my system are fantastic. As real as I need them to be. The sun sparkling on the polished surface of my Mini Metro is a beautiful sight indeed.
The scenery and tracks are also remarkably well rendered. The controls are completely customisable and a pleasure to use. The cars are wonderfully responsive and so much fun to drive I could almost weep with joy. I’ve been racing a Mini Metro around Brans Hatch on ‘Pro’ setting and it is a BLAST! At this point I should mention that I’ve been using an Xbox 360 controller, and it fits the job perfectly.
Previously, I must admit, I’ve been more of an acrade racer, rather than a sim racer – alwayd opting for loads of steering / braking assistance and auto gears. But that would be a massive waste with Race 07. Using manual gears is a MUST. The satisfaction of dropping down a gear or two to drift around a turn, then waiting for the optimum moment to shift up again is fantastic.
I can actually drive these cars in ‘Pro’ without sliding off the track at the first turn or spinning out of control for no apparent reason. I can win races in Pro!!!
The multi player is very well populated, with a wide choice of different cars, tracks and options – day or night, you’ll find at least a couple of MP races to join.
The only thing I would change is adding a single player career mode, but that could lead to clothes stores, casinos and indulgent cut scenes, I suppose.
